Number One - No-Calorie Diets
Some dieters really believe that if eating food is the problem, then the solution must be eating no food at all. Fasting until the pounds come off sounds like a good idea until boredom sets in or the hunger pangs become so overwhelming that a binge is just around the corner. Not only is self-imposed starvation uncomfortable, it's also unhealthy to deprive the body of the nutrients and calories (yes, calories) it needs to function. A self-imposed empty stomach is quickly going to go into defense mode and will eventually rebel until the fasting dieter sends out for pizza. The word diet is related to food. Take away the food and it's not a diet.
Number Two - Weight Loss in Fantasyland
It would be so motivating if the first day of a weight loss program guaranteed results. First-day dieters race to the scales for proof that the pounds are coming off a hurry. Unfortunately, losing weight doesn't work that way. Weight gain doesn't happen overnight so expecting weight loss to happen just as fast is not realistic. Weight loss programs are long-term commitments to a healthy diet and exercise. There's no getting around the fact that different people lose weight differently and some faster than others. Once-a-week dates with the scale are all that are needed to check a diet's progress.
Number Three - Exercise as Punishment
New Year's resolutions to lose weight fill up the gyms with dieters every January. By early March, the resolutions and the gym are forgotten, mostly because dieters equate exercise with pain. Sometimes there's a real reason for that. Dieters, anxious to get fast results, attack exercise workouts with a vengeance. Lifting too much weight, running too far and too fast and working out for too long are going to cause suffering that dieters believe they need to feel to get thinner. It doesn't take long for a dieter to sabotage an exercise program by feeling justified for quitting. Physical activity is supposed to be enjoyable, not a jail sentence. The right attitude and finding a workout that feels good are what keep a weight loss program working.
